Robert Chestnut Exhibit
Ocra-broke
From November through December, our Vault Gallery will feature photography by Ocracoke artist Robert Chestnut.
This series of environmental portraits, named “Ocra-broke” exposes the viewer to the other side of living in paradise: the everyday people who work hard and have fun, an island that closes down during the winter months, and the weathered structures that persist through each tourist season.
Along with nature filled scenes, Robert loves to find forgotten items and help shine a light on them. To convey his ideas he uses photography, oil painting, and printmaking.

Robert Chestnut is an Ocracoke based artist who loves sharing the sights of daily, island based living. After growing up on Ocracoke, Robert attended Jacksonville University in Florida where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. He then returned back to Ocracoke where he is now the school’s only art teacher. When not making art or teaching, Robert can be found restoring and preserving his 1964 FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser.
