Mark Brothers Exhibit
A Patient Turbulence
In April, our Vault Gallery will feature pen and ink work by Mark Brothers.
The work in this exhibition is inspired by Mark's imaginative idea that within each storm cloud lies a combustive volatile force, unstable but fueled by direct intent. Through his work, Mark aims to capture this tempestuous and turbulent expression of nature and uses it to stir the primal instinct inherited by each of us. His highly structured and heavily detailed monochromatic drawings are created to invoke a deeply instinctual emotional response by the viewer.
"Like a storm an idea often comes quickly though my process is time consuming and laborious, constantly refraining from working on ideas across the paper just 10 inches away, but days apart. Just as there is no sprinting a marathon I have come to develop 'A Patient Turbulence'."- Mark Brothers

Mark Brothers born in Elizabeth City, NC, was raised on his father's third generation farm. In High School he was determined his path in life was to be a ceramicist. In the summer of 2015 he went to find work in Seagrove North Carolina. Here he met and worked very briefly with a wood fire potter named Daniel Johnston. Mark learned the aesthetics of form and shape but, more importantly story telling through art. After too suddenly returning home, he would not show an interest in a career of art for several years. He rediscovered his passion in spring 2023 creating colorful and vibrant pen and watercolor floral pieces. In the summer of 2023 he settled into the moody pen and ink artwork for which he is known for today.
"I am a self taught pen and ink artist drawing inspiration from expressionism. My goal in art is to only mature freely, expressing myself quietly but emotionally." - Mark Brothers
