All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt. 2023 (92 mins)

Film critics suggest that the young filmmaker Raven Jackson’s evocative, impressionist storytelling style of this film calls to mind the films of great directors Andrei Tarkovsky and Terrence Malick. A film review from The New Yorker called Jackson’s “the directorial debut of the year.” The drama tells the story of a Black woman over four decades of life in rural Mississippi, “relating it to the tradition, inherited from African ancestors and still relatively common in parts of the country, for Black women to gather across generations and harvest little scoops of pale dirt from the roadside — actually the chalky mineral kaolinite which is plentiful across the southeastern U.S. — to eat, as a kind of

communal ritual. To view the trailer, click here

All films will be screened at Dare Arts in Manteo, unless otherwise specified.
