Outer Banks Veterans Event Directory

​On behalf of the citizens of Dare County, we would like to thank each of you for your service. Thank you for the sacrifices you made and continue to make to protect our freedom. 

 

Below you will find a list of events, ceremonies and specials/discounts for Veterans on the Outer Banks. We hope you and your family members will join us at one of the wonderful events or ceremonies taking place in Dare County this Veterans Week. Please note that some events and discounts require pre-registration, tickets and/or a Veterans ID. 

Special Events:​​

  • ​Annual Dare County Veterans Celebration Luncheon- Monday, November 10

The ​Annual Veterans Celebration Luncheon will be held at 12pm on Monday, November 10 at the Virginia Tillett Community Center, located at 950 Marshall C. Collins Drive in Manteo. RSVPs are required. Please RSVP to the luncheon by calling 252 475 9270. There will be a program and visual presentation highlighting our service members. Entertainment will be provided. 

  • Baum Center Letters From Home Special Event- Monday, November 10

A special live performance that honors veterans and unites the nation through music will be held at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills at 5:00pm on November 10. The event will feature high-energy singing and tap dancing in a funny and heartfelt, harmonic and uplifting way. The musicians will infuses the classic style of wartime music with a witty, modern edge. This event is open to all ages. Veterans get in for free.   • Veterans Writing Workshop- Saturday, November 15

The 13th Annual Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop will be held at the Coastal Studies Institute, ECU Outer Banks Campus in Wanchese from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday, November 15. North Carolina’s 7th Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti will be leading the workshop. During his time as Poet Laureate, Bathanti worked with military veterans and their families throughout the state, and beyond, particularly with Vietnam combat veterans struggling with PTSD and other invisible wounds of war. He is also an author, poet, educator, and the recipient of numerous other accolades. Beginner and experienced writers are invited to participate in this workshop that is free for Veterans, active-duty military and their family members.   • An Evening with Joseph Bathanti- Saturday, November 15

Experience a special evening of poetry with North Carolina's 7th Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti at The Pioneer Theater in downtown Manteo on Saturday, November 15 at 7:00pm. Bathanti will read selections from his poetry, fiction, and personal essays that span his writing life of nearly five decades. Admission is $5 for Veterans and active-duty military.   • Operation Green Light- November 4-11, 2025

Operation Green Light is a National Association of Counties initiative that encourages residents and businesses to show their support to local veterans by shining green lights throughout their communities to let local veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported. From November 4, 2025 through November 11, 2025, an array of county government buildings, municipal facilities and small businesses will be illuminated with green lights in honor of our local veterans.

Veterans Day Ceremonies on the Outer Banks:

  • Cape Hatteras Veterans Ceremony

Cape Hatteras Secondary School (CHSS) is hosting their annual Veterans Celebration on Friday, November 7 in Buxton. The day will begin at 9:00am in the CHSS cafeteria where Veterans will be served a free breakfast and will be able to visit and catch up. At 10:00am, the Veterans will be honored by students, faculty, and community members during a special program in the gymnasium. The program is open to all area Veterans and active-duty servicemen and women. 

  • Manteo Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day Ceremony in Downtown Manteo will take place on Tuesday, November 11 at 9:30am at the Dare County Veterans Memorial, located at 300 Queen Elizabeth Avenue, Manteo.

  • Southern Shores Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day Ceremony in Southern Shores will take place on Tuesday, November 11 at 11:00am at the Southern Shores Town Hall Flagpole Pavilion, located at 5375 N. Virginia Dare Trail, Southern Shores. 

 

  • Nags Head Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day Remember & Honor Ceremony in Nags Head will take place on Tuesday, November 11 at 11:00am at Nags Head Town Hall, located at 5401 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head.

  • Kill Devil Hills Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day Ceremony in Kill Devil Hills will take place on Tuesday, November 11 at 12:30pm. The ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial on Veterans Drive in Kill Devil Hills.

  • Ace Hardware provides a 10% discount to Veterans, active-duty military and reserves every day at all 7 Outer Banks locations. Ace Hardware has numerous locations on the Outer Banks. Please bring a valid military ID. 

  • Artsy Octopus offers a military, Veterans, and first responders a 20% discount everyday. Patrons must show ID upon checkout to receive the discount.

  • Atlantic Dentistry is honoring our nation's heroes by offering free dental services to all Veterans on Friday, November 7. Whether you need a cleaning, check-up, or dental care, they are here to serve you and say thank you for your service. Please call 252 261 7700 to schedule an appointment. Atlantic Dentistry is located at 3704 N. Croatan Highway Kitty Hawk.​​

  • Colonial Inn in Nags Head is offering 15% discounts off of vacation stays. Please call ahead to book and must present Military ID at check-in.

  • Electrical & Lighting Solutions provides a 15% discount on all services scheduled prior to Veterans Day, exclusively for Veterans.

  • First Flight Dental is giving free dental care to Veterans on Veterans Day (Nov. 11). Please call their office at 252 4418882 to schedule an appointment. First Flight Dental is located at 1024 Colington Rd. in Kill Devil Hills.

  • High Cotton NC BBQ offers 10% off meals for Veterans, active-duty and first responders year-round.

  • Jennette's Pier ​will be offering complimentary walk-on passes to Veterans, active-duty military and their family members on Veterans Day.

  • Jolly Roger Restaurant is offering a complimentary dinner entrée up to $18.99 on Veterans Day (Tuesday, Nov. 11).  Please bring a Military I.D. The Jolly Roger Restaurant is located at 1836 N. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills.

  • Kitty Hawk Kites stores offer a 10% discount to all Veterans and active-duty military.

  • Morgan Family Dentistry is doing their 11th Annual Veteran's Dental Clinic now through November 11. Veterans (active & retired) contact clinic directly to schedule appointment. Military ID required for discount. Walk-ins are welcome, but they prefer apts. For more information call 252 261 2358. Morgan Family Dentistry is located at 10 A Juniper Trail, Kitty Hawk.

 

  • North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is offering 50% off admission for all active-duty, retired, or reserve and their immediate family members on Veterans Day, November 11. Please note that tickets must be reserved ahead of time on the aquarium's website. The aquarium is located at 374 Airport Road, Manteo and is open daily from 9am-5pm. Must show proof of service/ID.

  • Ramada Plaza by Wyndham offers a 15% discount for Veterans year-round. A military ID is required. The Ramada is located at 1701 South Virginia Dare Trail in Kill Devil Hills.

  • OB-Xscape Rooms is offering Veterans one free 60 minutes game on Veterans Day. This special is for Veterans online and a Military ID must be presented. Advanced booking is recommended. Call 252-564-9636 for details. OB-Xscape Rooms is located at 1 Ocean Blvd. Ste. 108-111 Southern Shores.

  • Tarheel Motel in Nags Head is offering 10% off vacation stays for Veterans. Guests must use the code "MILITARY" to book and present a valid ID at check-in.

  • Upscale Furniture in Powell's Point is offering 20% discounts to all Veterans during Veterans Week and a 10% discount to all active-duty military and their families the rest of the year.

  • Wind Sports for Wounded Warriors (WS4WW) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to serve and empower wounded military service personnel through wind sport education and  experiences. The mission is to provide emotional support through active camaraderie through wind sports, similar to what Veterans are accustomed to as part of military service.

  • Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills will waive entrance fees on Monday, November 11 to celebrate Veterans Day. ***Pending reopening from Government shutdown.

Dare County Veterans ID Card Info: 

The Dare County Board of Commissioners created the Veterans Advisory Council in respectful recognition of the service and sacrifice of all Dare County Veterans. DCVAC’s signature program is the Dare County Veterans I.D. Card. If you are interested in receiving a Veterans I.D. Card, you will need your DD214 form showing an honorable discharge and a driver’s license with a Dare County address. Many local businesses support our Veterans and want to say ‘thank you’ for all you have done to protect and serve our nation and the I.D. Card enables you to receive discounts off goods and services at many local business locations. If you would like further information about how to obtain your I.D.
