32nd Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show
(2009 Best in Show by Jeff Linn)
On display at the Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head through February. Includes a wide variety of local fine art ranging from conceptual to realistic. Sculpture, painting, drawing, fiber, pottery and mixed media. The show is the longest running visual art exhibition in the county. Stick gained recognition as an illustrator for magazines such as Collier’s, Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and Outdoor America during the early part of the 20th century. He is most known for painting hundreds of hunting and fishing scenes to illustrate outdoor and adventure stories. In addition to his contribution to the art world, Stick was a man of vision. After visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the 1920s on a surf-fishing trip, he became enamored with the region and its potential as a tourist destination. It was largely through Stick’s efforts that the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was established as America’s first national seashore.
Judges for this year's show are Michael Dorsey and Mark Phillips.
Open to members and residents. Cash awards. Opening Reception: Saturday, January 30, 2010, 7-9 p.m. at Glen Eure's Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head. Call 252-473-5558 or see this web site under "Annual Events" for more information or a prospectus.

Linoleum Cuts with printmaker Mark Phillips

Printmaking Workshop
6pm – 9pm
$80 for DCAC Members - $90 for Non-Members
104 Sir Walter Raleigh Street, Manteo
Follow in the artistic footsteps of Matisse, Picasso and M. C. Escher and learn the art of linoleum cut! There is no press needed for this relief printing method – all you need is a brayer, ink, paper and a wooden spoon. Students will create their own original linoleum block prints from black and white imagery. Tools and linoleum blocks will be provided.
In linoleum block printing, the image is carved into a wooden block topped with linoleum using special tools. You will then ink your block and create your prints. For the workshop we will only be working with one color, but once you understand the basics, this technique can used for multicolor prints. We will have examples on hand.
Ink, Linoleum blocks, brayers, carving tools, wooden spoons, carbon paper (for transferring images), and paper will all be provided.
You may see more of Phillips' work at http://www.graphicmarx.com.

"Fusion" photograph by Bill Lease 2009 People's Choice Award by Scott Stockdale
Features an eclectic mix of local art. On display at the Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. Held in memory of Mollie Fearing, one of the founders of the root organization from which DCAC arose. In 1975 a group of Dare county residents met at the home of Mollie Fearing where they set about founding an organization that would introduce thousands of school children and adults to music, dance, theatre, painting, sculpture, poetry and literature. The organization would initially be called the Sea and Sounds Arts Council and later, the Dare County Arts Council. Mollie Fearing was elected president of the Arts Council in 1975 and was a vital supporter and advocate of the arts until the time of her death on September 3, 1997. Mollie’s contributions to the community were numerous, from serving as mayor for the Town of Manteo, to serving on the board of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, to her dedication to the arts. Mollie’s legacy in our community remains strong to this day.

Paint in Plein Aire with instructor Catherine Hillis

10 am until 3:30 pm
$75 for members, $105 for non-members
Outdoor location to be announced
Enjoy the outdoors and learn how to paint on location. Bring the landscape to life with the fluid mark. The instructor will teach you how to simplify what you see, design a successful composition and paint a quick piece that defines the location.
The instructor will provide demonstrations, one on one guidance, helpful information about her plein aire adventures in France, and a positive critique at the end of the day.
Bring all watercolor painting supplies and extra paper, snacks, lunch and drinks. Bring a chair, umbrella, hat, sun block, bug repellant and a camera to record the scene in case you cannot complete your painting.
You may see more of Ms. Hillis' work at www.caterhinehillis.com

Watercolor on Yupo Workshop with Pat Troiani

9am - 4pm
DCAC Studios
$150 for members or $180 for non-members
Two-Day Workshop Description:
The first day of class, we will paint as many backgrounds as the student can accomplish. It is a very, slippery, smooth surface. Beautiful, loose effects can be achieved. Some of these can be landscapes, seascapes, florals or still lifes. You need to bring photos or ideas of things to put into your backgrounds later. I will also bring many photos to work from. We will work using tube watercolors squeezed fresh on a palette. Using a minimum of water and lots of color, we paint a whole background, not worrying at all about subject matter at this time. By tilting, using a spray mist bottle, sponges, scrapers, etc.we manipulate the background to our satisfaction. It has to dry completely (since it is a synthetic surface, you CANNOT use a hairdryer). Next we will draw on tracing paper the subject matter for our paintings. This allows us to space them easily on our dried backgrounds.
Landscapes could have barns, fences, houses, animals etc. Seascapes could have gulls, dolphins, pelicans, fish, or boats. Florals could have a close-up of one or more flowers, a garden scene, or a still life with flowers. One at a time, these tracings are placed on the painted surface and traced using architects, erasable carbon. Then using a brush and clear water, we begin to wash out the traced area taking it back to the white yupo. Blot it dry and then paint the composition parts as you would a regular watercolor. When it is completely dry, we will spray archival fixative on the finished painting. After that you can no longer change the painting.
You NEVER throw away a piece of yupo because until it is “fixed”- all the paint can be washed off and start over. Another use for these backgrounds is to fix them and then collage on top of them. The important thing is to bring photos or ideas to use in the paintings. Everyone will be doing something different and we learn from each other. I always bring ideas and photos to work from in class in case you’re not sure what might work; however, you will be choosing what YOU like and not what I decide!
This is totally different from traditional watercolor. It's much easier, and the best part is… you never lose a piece of paper because the paint can be totally washed off and start over again until you decide it is finished (then we use fixative on it and that makes it permanent).
